My Philosophy

My method of behavior counseling includes first getting a detailed history of the problem, interviewing the people and observing the animal involved.     Once I have reached an accurate diagnosis I then formulate a behavior program.   A behavior program consists of two things, management techniques and behavior modification.

Management techniques will help you deal with, lessen or avoid the problem.   This gives us time to change the animal’s behavior with behavior modification.   Behavior modification usually entails changing the way an animal feels about certain things or stopping an unwanted behavior.   To do this I use a lot of positive reinforcement (things the dog likes such as treats, pets, praise, sniffs, toys) along with some consequences (removal of the things dogs like such as removal of attention, removal of owner, loss of the treat or toy).   This allows for a balanced training program.

I do not believe in harsh or aversive training methods.   I do not use electric shock, choke, prong or pinch collars and I believe that the use of such training methods may make a behavior problem worse.   My training methods are gentle and humane and focus on educating you about normal animal behavior and how animals learn.   I teach you how to become an effective leader and how to carry out the behavior modification program using my methods.

If a behavior problem is severe enough I may recommend medication for your pet.   It is important to work closely with your veterinarian if medication is warranted. A current physical examination as well as screening blood tests before and during medication is often required.   It is very important to make sure the medication we use for your pet is safe and effective.
