Puppy Parties at Flagler Animal Hospital

Early socialization is the number one most important thing for a young puppy.
The window for socialization is very narrow and starts to close at about 16 weeks of age.   This means that your puppy needs to meet all kinds of people, experience all kinds of noises, visit all kinds of places and meet all kinds of dogs and puppies before it reaches 16 weeks of age.

Socialization to other puppies is crucial in the development of good social skills as well as bite inhibition.   Take advantage of this fabulous puppy play time.   Puppy play group is structured with your puppy's temperament in mind so that they have a positive and fun experience.   All puppies are healthy and there is a strict clean up rule for any accidents to help provide a safe environment for your puppy.   The lobby of the hospital is cleaned thoroughly before the puppy party with a disinfectant that kills bacteria and viruses to ensure a safe play environment.

  • Play group is held one Saturday a month at the Flagler Animal Hospital (in the lobby), 130 Old King's Rd S. in Flagler Beach, FL
  • The 1 pm play group is for pups 8 weeks up to 5.5 months (or 6 -7 months for smaller/shy pups). Puppies will be aged by their teeth at their first visit.
  • Proof of vaccinations appropriate for age are required the first visit.
  • Pups must have a minimum of one round of vaccinations for Distemper and Parvo (vaccine must have been given at least 7 days prior to puppy party). Intranasal Bordatella vaccine is recommended
  • Play time is free!

My Treats Recipe

This is a great treat recipe that is very easy to make.   The treats are wheat and corn free and have no preservatives.   I have found that most dogs love these treats (even picky eaters) and that my own dogs perform better when I have these tasty treats as rewards.

1 lb. of ground turkey
1 cup of oatmeal (old fashioned)
1 cup of parmesean cheese (grated)
1 egg lightly beaten
1-3 dashes of garlic powder

Mix all the ingredients in a big bowl and then press firmly into a 13x9 (or larger) pyrex dish or other baking dish.   The key here is to get the mixture as flat as possible so you have less cutting to do later on.   I have made this in a loaf but I find that I can't get as small pieces with this technique.

Bake at 350 for 45-50 minutes.

The mixture usually pulls slightly away from the pan.

Let cool

Use a spatula to remove it from the pan and let cool on a wire rack.   This prevents the treats from getting soggy.

Cut up treats with a pizza cutter into bite-size squares.   For large dogs the pieces should be the size of a pea and for small dogs they should be the size of 1/2 a pea.

The longer you cook it the crispier crust it will have.   If you like them really soft with no crust then cook them for less time.   I like the crust because it makes them easier to handle while training.

I place a handful of treats into small freezer bags and then place all the small bags into a large freezer bag and freeze them until ready for use.   When I am ready to train I just pull out a small bag and in a few minutes they are thawed out enough for use.   I find that some dogs like them even if they are partially frozen.
